What to look for
Record where you saw the animal. Rats are larger than mice, but a brief glimpse can be misleading.
Gnaw marks and droppings can help establish where rodents have been active.
Note holes, repeated routes and sightings near the building, without disturbing the area.
Make that distinction in your first message. Include whether the rat was in a living space, basement, garage, yard or lane. If you suspect a connection to a drain or damaged pipe, describe the observation; it is not proof of where the animal entered.
For a shared Montréal building, identify the spaces you can access and those managed by someone else. If the activity is on public property, the Ville de Montréal’s rodent guidance is a useful place to check the appropriate reporting route.
A request concerning one indoor location is different from a building with several reported activity areas. Tell Gardepest about the extent of the sightings, the property layout and previous interventions.
Ask what the proposed work includes, how activity will be monitored and whether any repairs need a separate contractor. Drain investigation, structural work and proofing should be confirmed individually rather than assumed to be part of rat extermination.
Questions
No. Identifying the rodent matters when choosing the approach and equipment. Describe what you saw without feeling you need to make the final identification yourself.
An outdoor sighting alone does not establish indoor activity. Report the location and any separate evidence inside so the two can be assessed together.
A photograph may help with identification, but it does not show the full property or extent of activity. Include the affected locations and access details when requesting an assessment.
